ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

"Judge Dredd" was 12 months in pre-production

It was 18 years ago that writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra created the character of Judge Dredd

Director Danny Cannon says he has inspired by the comic since he was 9.

Director Cannon visualised "Judge Dredd" as an action film comparable to classic epics such as "Spartacus," "Ben Hur,"

He believed it was "as much an epic passion play as it is a sci-fi film"

He "didn't want audiences merely to be dazzled by the special effects"

It took six months to build the enormous sets of "Judge Dredd's" Mega-City One

Director Cannon, himself an artist, spent an entire year with art directors and a team of illustrators conceiving the overall look of the picture.

Production designer Nigel Phelps saw Mega- City One as "a medieval walled city of the future which has grown beyond anyone's imagination"

The unique city was created with a combination of full scale sets, miniatures as well as computer generated images

Initially, North Africa had been selected as the site for the Cursed Earth sequences but the decision was made to move the shoot to Iceland

Danny Cannon sees Stallone as "a contemporary megastar, an icon in the same way that Dredd is in his universe."

The writers of the movie saw the removal of the character's helmet as a way to humanize him...  and give him an identity.

Actor Stallone wanted a chance to redefine the hero of the 22nd century.

Stallone wanted Dredd to be "a true thinking man, not just a dispassionate dispenser of Law."

Sylvester Stallone believes that movie audiences want to see the hero undergo a revelation which transforms him, makes him greater than he was before.
